Hair Loss Cause - Could You Have Ringworm?

One hair loss cause is ringworm, or Tinea capatis.  If you have ringworm and it's causing you to lose you hair, you have to understand the condition and know what to do about it.

Ringworm starts as an infection that in your scalp.  If it's not treated properly, a fungus develops and that leads to ringworm.  One of the first symptoms of ringworm is itching.  At that point, the scalp area is red and irritated.  The next step is hair loss and the appearance of bald patches.

Ringworm as a hair loss cause is not uncommon, especially in children.  But how do you get it?

First of all, let's make one point clear,  ringworm is not a worm.  Ringworm is a fungus.

If you have bad hygiene, or your skin is damp and not washed, ringworm can result.  If you've had an injury or scrape on or scalp that is not treated properly, an infection can result, giving way to the growth of the ringworm fungus.

The first step in treatment is an anti-fungal medication - often found in the form of a medicated shampoo or salve.  A salve will help to get rid of the underlying infection.  After that, the medicated shampoo will keep the area clean and help prevent it from getting any worse.  If you do have ringworm, it is extremely important that you keep your hair and scalp as clean as possible.  Keep the towel you use to dry your hair and your pillowcases separate from the rest of the laundry.  Above all, don't share a hairbrush or comb with anyone else.
